• Salome Hickling, sister of Vashti Daft, died 16^th March 1836 aged 30yrs also Lila, daughter of Salome died 29^th September 1844 aged 14yrs also Vashti Daft died 21^st March 1866 aged 59yrs ‘in memory of Vashti Daft who died 21^st March 1866 aged 59yrs and of her much beloved and lamented sister, Salome Hickling who died 16^th March 1836 aged 30years also of Lila Hickling, daughter of Salome Hickling who died 29^th September 1844 aged 14yrs Christ was their hope’

• P92: Houses on Bridegate Lane
  • July 1923. To be sold at ‘The Plough Inn’ a pair of semi-detached cottages.
  • (a) “Country cottage with garage, outbuildings, garden situate fronting to Smithfield Lane, recently in the occupation of Mr. Thomas Hickling”. At a later date Mr. and Mrs. Albert Rose (nee Emmie Simpson) lived in this house and after the death of Mr. Rose his daughter June and her husband left and the house was offered for sale.
  • (b) “Brick built and tiled cottage semi-detached from above cottage now in the occupation of Mr. Edward Hickling”. This cottage was bought by Mr. Alwyn F. Shelton for £420. Later on, Sir Jessie Hind of Kinoulton owned the cottage and Mrs. Aston was the tenant. It was again sold, this time at Kinoulton public house, for £100 with £40 out of £100 to be spent on repairs. The buyer was Mr. J. Coombs.

Maggie’s Memories:

(p.91) Mr. & Mrs. Ted Woolley lived at one or two houses in the district before retiring to the old School House, when it was not needed for a teacher. Mr. Woolley helped one of his brothers on the farm, Mrs. Woolley nee Connie Hickling was a character, she didn’t beat about the bush, or mince her words, was excitable, especially around a General Election and some would aggravate her and get her going properly. Connie as so many called her was good natured, she was and her family staunch members of the Parish Church, and rather bigoted towards the Methodists, and of course she lived next to the Chapel which annoyed her, so she had a privet hedge planted and also in the porch a shutter fixed so she could not see people going in and out of the Chapel door, when I was looking after the Chapel, should been my early teens, she would call out for me to go round for a cup of cocoa, and she would say “I shan’t set my foot in that place to bring it to you”. When we had a social evening at the Wesley Guild in the Sunday School and I was cleaning up the following day poor Mrs. Woolley hadn’t anything bad enough to say, she certainly had a bee in her bonnet about the Wesleyans as she called us. They had four children, one died in infancy, two sons both living away, their daughter Bessie (Mrs. T. Timms) in Hickling and their Grandson lan Woolley is at the Post Office.

(p.94) More residents names I remember when at school:

• Mr. & Mrs. T. Hickling. Lived on Pastures until retired & lived in Chapel Lane.
• Mr. & Mrs. L. Hickling. Lived in Hickling & Pastures. Moved to Kettleby. Daughter (Mrs. Barnes) came to live here in 1975.

Hickling Family in Wymeswold.

This will is one of three surviving wills in sequence; father, son, grandson which follow the progress of younger sons from farmers to framework knitters.

Johanne Hikelyng, (John Hickling) is listed as a poll tax payer in Wymeswold in 1379, about the time when English surnames are starting to crystallise. His occupation is given as faber, ie carpenter or builder.

Since there was still a Mr Hickling living in the village up to about 10 yrs ago, Hicklings have lived in Wymeswold continuously for over 600 years.
