William Stokes of Wartnaby 1756 Will and Inventory

In the Name of God Amen I William Stokes of Wartnaby in the County of Leicester husbandman Do this thirtieth day of October in the year of our Lord 1755 Make and ordaine this my last Will and testament in Manner following that is to say
Whereas in and by one Indenture of Release bearing date on or about the 28th June 1727 and Made between Elizabeth Stokes Widow and myself of the first part Sarah my late Wife of the Second part and Thomas Oswin and Christopher Dealer of the third part a power is therein and thereby reserved to and for me the said William Stokes to Dispose of one Undivided Moiety or equal half part of all that my messuage or tenement with the backside homestead and Closes thereunto belonging with their appurtenances situate standing lying and being in Wartnaby aforesaid And also of all those three yard Lands of arable meadow and pasture ground and Common lying and being in Several fields precincts and territories of Wartnaby aforesaid to the said messuage belonging now in my own possession And also of one undivided moiety or half part of all that Close lying and being in Wartnaby woulds Containing five acres more or less now in the possession of Willm Moore and also of all houses outhouses buildings barns stables hades balks meadows feedings Commons and Common of pasture trees woods underwoods and of all other profitts advantages and appurtenances to the same belonging Unto all and every the Child and Children of me the said William Stokes and Sarah my late Wife in such parts and proportions as I the said William Stokes should be any deed or Deeds Writing or Writings or last Will and testament in writing direct limit or appoint
I do therefore pursuant to such power in me vested give and devise all and singular the said undivided moiety or half part of the said messuage or tenement three yard land Closes and all the hereinbefore mentioned premises with the appurtenances and every part thereof unto my Son Richard Stokes and his heires To hold the same unto my said Son Richard Stokes his heires and assignes for ever
Also I give and bequeath unto my Daughter Mary Stokes the sum of one hundred pounds
Also I give unto my son William Stokes the sum of one hundred pounds
Also I give unto my son Samuel Stokes one hundred pounds
All which Legacies I will to be paid to them within twelve Months after my death And I will that the receipts of my said two Sons notwithstanding their Minorship shall be sufficient to my executors for the same
And I further will that my son Samuel Stokes shall be put forth apprentice to such trade as he shall chuse as soon as conveniently can be after my decease out the legacy I hereby give him And that the remainder of the said Legacy shall be put out to interest by and in the name of my Good Friend the Reverend Mr William Cant and that the Interest and produce thereof shall be paid and applied unto and to the use of my said son Samuel during his apprenticeship to find him Cloaths and other necessaries And that the principal sum shall be paid to him at his age of twenty one years or sooner if he comes out of his apprenticeship
Also I give unto my said daughter Mary Stokes one Dozen of good pewter plates one Chest of drawers and the bed and bedding in the new parlour
Also I give unto my said son William the best bed and bedding in the Chambers
Also I give unto my said son Samuel the next best bed and bedding in the Chambers
Also I give unto daughter Mary two pewter dishes
And whereas I am desirous that my said son William Stokes shall and may have the tenant right and possession of the two yard land in Wartnaby aforesaid which I rent of the Reverend Mr Scribo [?] either Rector or Vicar of Quarndon and Woodhouse And of those two Closes which I rent of the Right Honourable the Lord Feversham and which his mother usually and formerly held I Do hereby give and bequeath the said Tenant rights and possession of the same Unto my said son William Stokes humbly Desiring my said Landlords to accept of him to become their Tenant for the same
Also all the rest and residue of my Goods Cattle Chattles and personal Estate of what kind soever my debts Legacies and funeral expences being first paid and discharged I give and bequeath the same Unto my two Sons John Stokes and Richard Stokes whom I hereby appoint full and joynt executors of this my Will hereby revoking all former wills [about 7 words missing in a fold, probably something like “by me made and declaring this to be my last”] will and testament
