In the same of God Amen I William Clifton of Clifton in the County of Nottingham Barronet being in good and perfect health and sound memory (thanks be to God for the same) do make and ordaine this my last Will and Testament in manner following
First I give and bequeath my Soul into the hands of God my Maker assuredly trusting in the merits of Jesus Christ my saviour for pardon and remission of all my Sins And my body to the Earth to be decently buryed in the Vault of the Chancell of the Church of Clifton aforesaid at the discretion of my Executors hereafter named And as touching my reall and personall Estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me I give devise bequeath and dispose the same in manner following
And First I give and devise All that my Mannor of Kinnalton alias Kinnolton with the rights members and appurtenances thereof in the said County of Nottingham And all and singular my messuages closes inclosures lands tenements and hereditaments whatsoever scituate lying and being in Kinnalton als Kinnolton aforesaid and in Hickling and Owthorpe in the said County of Nottingham unto William Sacheverell of Barton in the said County of Nottingham Esq and Edward Bigland Serjeant at Law their heires and assignes for every Upon Trust and to the intent and purpose That they the said Wm Sacheverell and Edward Bigland my said Trustees and the survivor of them and the heires of such survivor by and out of the rents issues and profits of the said Mannor and premisses or by leases mortgages or sales thereof or of any part or parcell thereof As they in their discretions shall thinke fit and convenient shall raise moneys for the payment of all such just debts as I shall owe at the time of my death either by Mortgage Bond or otherwise and which within six months after my death shall be made appeare to my said Trustees or the Survivor of them or to the heirs of such Survivor to have been due and owing by me in my life time And also for the payment of the sume of four Thousand pounds due and oweing to my Sister Arabella Clifton for her portion And after payment of my debts and portion aforesaid Then for the payment of all such legacyes sume and sumes of money as in and this my last Will and Testament I shall give and bequeath And after payment of the debts portion and legacyes aforesaid Then the residue of the said moneys which shall be raised by and out of the said Mannor and premisses as aforesaid and out of the personall Estate hereinafter for that purpose by me bequeathed I give and bequeath the same to my two kinsmen Gervas Clifton and Robert Clifton his Brother the two sons of my late Uncle Robert Clifton Esq deceased equally to be divided betwixt them And my Will and meaning is that if the said Gervas Clifton or any other person or persons for him or in his behalfe shall within twelve months next after my decease (if he shall be then liveing) or if he shall be dead Then if the said Robert Clifton his brother or any other person or persons for him or in his behalfe shall within the said twelve months after my decease well and truely satisfye and pay or to the good likeing and content of my said Trustees or the Survivor of them or to the heires of such Survivor sufficiently secure to be paid all and every my debts and the said portion and legacyes That then my said Trustees or the Survivor of them or the heires of such Survivor shall grant and convey the said Mannor and premisses so to them devised as aforesaid to such of them the said Gervas Clifton and Robert Clifton as shall so pay or secure to be paid my said debts and the said portion and legacyes in manner as aforesaid
And as for and concerning All that my Mannor of Stanton super le Wolds with the rights members and appurtenances thereof in the said County of Nottingham And all those closes or grounds lying and being in the parish of Broughton in the said County of Nottingham And all and singular my messuages closes inclosures lands tenements and hereditaments whatsoever scituate lyeing and being in Stanton super le Wolds and Broughton aforesaid or either of them I give and devise the same to my Brother in Law Sir John Parsons Barronet for and dureing the terme of his natural life without impeachment of waste And from and after the determination of that Estate I give and devise the same to the said Wm Sacheverall and Edward Bigland and their heires dureing the naturall life of the said Sir John Parsons Upon Trust to support the contingent uses and estates hereinafter mentioned And to that purpose to make entryes as occasion shall require But to permitt and suffer the said Sir John Parsons to receive the rents and profits thereof dureing his naturall life and after the decease of the said Sir John Parsons I give and devise the same to Dame Katherine the wife of the said Sir John Parsons being my eldest sister for the terme of her naturall life without impeachment of waste and after her decease I give and devise the same Mannor and premisses to the first & all other the sons of the Body of the said Sir John Parsons on the body of the said Dame Katherine his wife lawfully begotten or to be begotten and to the heires males of the of the bodye of such first and all other the said lawfully issueing successively And for default of such issue I give and devise the same to all and every the daughter and daughters of the body of the said Sir John Parsons on the body of the said Dame Katherine lawfully begotten or to be begotten and to the heires of the severall and respective bodyes of such daughter and daughters lawfully issueing to take as Tennants in Comon and not as joynte tenants equally to be divided amongst them And for default of such issue Then I give and devise the same Mannor and premisses to the right heires of the said Dame Katherine for ever
Also I give and bequeath to all such servants as shall live with me at the time of my death halfe a years wages to each of them over and besides what shall be then due to them according to the respective wages they do receive of me
Also I give and bequeath to the Poore of the parish of Clifton aforesaid the sume of Ten pounds And my mind and will is That all and singular the debts portion sume and sumes of money before mentioned shall be paid as soone as the same cann conveniently be raised And for the more speedy raiseing and paying the debts portion sume and sumes of money aforesaid I give devise and bequeath unto the said Wm Sacheverell and Edward Bigland All that my terme and interest in the Rectory of Blyth in the said County of Nottingham and All my household goods and personall Estate whatsoever (except the Terme and Interest of and in the Mannor of Carlton hereinafter mentioned)
And whereas there doth now remaine in me or in some other person or persons in trust for me as Executor or Administrator to Dame Frances Clifton my late mother deceased a certaine terme of fourscore and ninteene years or some other number of yeares of and in the Mannor of Carlton Carlton Kingston and Carlton Baron with the appurtenances in the said County of Nottingham and of and in diverse messuages lands and hereditaments in Carlton aforesaid Now my mind and will is And I do hereby declare the same to be That so much of the said Terme as doth now remaine shall go along with waite and attend upon the freehold and Inheritance of the said Mannor and premisses in Carlton aforesaid according to the respective uses and estates thereof some time heretofore by me limmitted or declared
And my will and meaning further is That the said Wm Sacheverell and Edward Bigland their heires executors administrators and assignes shall be reimbursed and indemnified by and out of the said moneys to be raised as aforesaid and out of my said personall Estate all such sume and sumes of money as they or any of them shall lay out expend or be put unto by reason or concerning the premisses or any the Trusts aforesaid
And I do hereby nominate and appoint the said William Sacheverell and Edward Bigland executors of this my last Will and Testament earnestly intrusting them to see this my Will truely and faithfully performed
And I do hereby revoake all former and other Wills by me made and do publish and declare this to be my last Will and Testament In Witness whereof I the said Sir Wm Clifton have hereunto set my hand and seale the eight and twentieth day of June in the six and thirtieth yeare of the raigne of our Soveraigne Lord Charles the second by the grace of God King of England &c Anno Domini 1684
