Whilst working on the Deeds of the property now known as Old Mill Cottage, different branches of the Collishaw emerged as linked to the property. It is hoped that we can include a detailed history of the family in Hickling in the future but in the meantime a number of extracts can be found, below:
There are two distinct Collishaw family groups involved in this property:
(1) William and John Collishaw (brothers born in Wysall):
William and Elizabeth (Wright) Collishaw ofWaterlane Farm (farmer)
William Collishaw baptised 24th December 1815 in Wysall – parents William (farmer) and Anne Collishaw.
Their son, Henry Wright Collishaw farmed The Elms (now Elm Farm) in Hickling; he would later act as executor of William & Betsy (Wharf) Collishaw’s respective Wills.
Henry Wright Collishaw married Edith Mary Woolley; their son Percy continued to farm at The Elms/Elm Farm.

William and his elder brother Robert pursue the trade of joinery whilst his father (Edward), brother (John) and nephew (George Henry) are all in the butcher’s trade.

Five different William Collishaws in the mid-1800s:
There appear to be at least five different William Collishaws in Hickling at this time. Records sometimes include hints to differentiate; William Collishaw ‘the older’, ‘the younger’, senior or junior and also by location, of Waterlane Farm, of The Wharf, of The Elms (now Elm Farm).
By the 1860s (see, below) there are two couples named William and Elizabeth Collishaw;
William and Elizabeth (Whittle) Collishaw cited as neighbours to the south of Old Mill Cottage in 1861; the family moved away from Hickling in the 1870s and they are next recorded in Aston, Warks in the 1891 census (see, below).

William and Elizabeth (Wright) Collishaw, resident at Waterlane Farm; this William is about 10 years older than (1), whilst the two Elizabeths are of a similar age.

from the birth records of their children they seem to be living in Hickling from at least 1857/8 but they don’t appear in the 1861 census. However, birth records do identify the maiden name of the respective mothers in the different households.

James Wright Collishaw lived all his life in Hickling; he died, age 66, 11th January 1930.

There are several possibilities when untangling the connections:
It is likely that, to avoid confusion; William (Waterlane Farm) became known as the elder and William (Wharf) was known as the younger.
Whether William Collishaw (1) was ever referred to with a label is unknown.
‘Betsy’ seems always to have referred to Betsy (Wharf) Collishaw; there is no sign that either of the other two Elizabeths were known as Betsy to distinguish them one-from-the-other.
William and Elizabeth (Whittle) Collishaw:
Resident as neighbours to the south of Old Mill Cottage in 1861.
This family is likely to be linked to the Waterlane Farm and the Wharf Collishaws (relationship tbc).
William Collishaw baptised Hickling, 3rd July 1825 – parents Edward & Elizabeth Collishaw (father’s occupation; gardener – later he is recorded as a butcher).

Death record for Edward Collishaw (Bingham District) Q2 1863; buried in Hickling 25th April 1863, age 76.
There are no other records for an Edward Collishaw of this age in Hickling at this time – however, his occupation as a gardener on William Collishaw’s birth record remains an anomaly (particularly as the two are never clearly listed in the same household in census records).
It seems that Edward’s sons Robert and William pursue trades in joinery; whilst Edward’s son John and John’s son (George Henry Collishaw) follow Edward’s trade as a butcher.

The household is listed next to that of Edward Collishaw – age 50, butcher; as Robert is married he is likely to be in his own household with his brother William residing with him rather than their parents (perhaps in neighbouring properties).
Note; William’s birth record describes his father Edward as a gardener and not as a butcher; there is also a discrepancy in Robert’s age – confirmation needed; there is a possibility that these are two separate Collishaw households but there are significant similarities, too.

In 1841 he had been in his brother Robert’s household as an Ag Lab – he is now a joiner like Robert. Later he is recorded in Hickling as a baker and grocer but returns to the joinery trade after leaving the village in the 1870s.
(this is assuming that these are a correct interpretation of these family records and that they all relate to the same William, son of the same Edward)

Elizabeth Whittle; likely baptism record in Langar (residence; Langar-cum-Barnstone); 6th July 1823 – parents Thomas (farmer) and Elizabeth Whittle.

Frederick Collishaw born 3Q 1851 – mother’s maiden name Whittle; died 1855 and buried in Hickling 6th January 1855.
Thomas Edward Collishaw born 1Q 1858 – mother’s maiden name, Whittle (listed in census records for Hickling in 1861 and 1871 – in 1901 he is a widower and joiner in his brother’s household in Aston, Warks).
William Frederick Collishaw born 4Q 1860 – mother’s maiden name Whittle. He is listed in census records for Hickling in 1861 and 1871. In 1891 he is unmarried and living with his parents on Cato Street, Aston, Warwickshire as a carpenter and professional cricketer. He is located here until his death in 1936 (marriage, census & probate records) – see photo W0417 cricket team 1863 (possibly his father)

There is no trace of the family in 1881 but they are no longer resident in the property neighbouring Old Mill Cottage by 1885. It would seem that the family moved away from Hickling at some time in the 1870s, settling in Aston, Warwickshire by 1891:

He is not directly related to either of the Collishaw households that previously lived neighbouring this property.
However, William (Wharf) Collishaw is likely to be the nephew of William and Elizabeth (Waterlane Farm) Collishaw.
William (Waterlane Farm) Collishaw and John (father of William (Wharf) Collishaw) were both born in Wysall; this may explain the later link between William & Betsy Collishaw and James Wright Collishaw (son at Waterlane Farm).
William and Betsy Collishaw had no children of their own.

1922 transactions indicate William Collishaw is resident at Owthorpe Cottage, Cropwell Bishop.
No records found for Charles William Collishaw, chemist
Chris Granger’s history records that Betsy Collishaw left a bequest to the Church in 1921 in her Will; it was used to install electricity to the building. Her husband, William Collishaw, also left a bequest to be used for general Church maintenance. The amounts bequeathed are unknown (further research needed).
For many years William and Betsy Collishaw gave 5cwt of coal to each widow and widower at Christmas. Following William’s retirement, they gave 5 shillings instead.

Following the death of James Wright Collishaw on the 11th January 1930, the property is sold by Charles William Collishaw to Mr Swanwick by conveyance dated 25th February 1930.
Charles William Collishaw; baptised 25th December 1887 Wandsworth All Saints, Surrey – parents John and Catherine May (Fox) Collishaw. John Collishaw is a chemist.
His death record gives his birth date as 11th November 1887.
John Collishaw (chemist) was born in Hickling and was the brother of William (Wharf) Collishaw. He moved to London sometime before 1880 when his eldest daughter is born in Islington.

WWI: Charles William Collishaw served as a Sergeant in the Royal Army Medical Corps Territorial Force from 1914-1920 (medal card available from the National Archives).
He enlisted on the 13th November 1912 and was discharged on the 11th May 1919.
