Effects under £450.”
- Census 1841:
- John age 80 (b. 1761 Ag Lab) & Elizabeth age 75 (b. 1866) Corner are listed with a 15 year old boy, Henry Skinner also in the household (shoemaker).
- Joseph (age 50, male servant); Robert (age 25, shoemaker); Hannah (age 9). His wife and none of his other children are listed – Robert and Hannah are his eldest and youngest, respectively.
- An Elizabeth Corner (age 50, independent) is shown living in the Hickling household of Robert Gill grocer (age 30 and with 4 small children).
- An Elizabeth Corner (age 20, female servant) is shown in the household of the Davies family on Hickling Pastures.
- John Corner: no trace
- Mary Corner: no trace
- A Joseph Corner (age 15) is listed in the Thurman household on Hickling Pastures as an agricultural labourer.
- An Anne Corner (age 14) is listed in the Phipps household on Hickling Pastures but without an occupation.
- (The Davies, Thurman and Phipps households appear to be farming neighbours as their census entries follow in order.
- Septimus (shoemaker) and his wife Mary are shown in her father’s (Richard Copley – mother deceased?) household along with children; John (age 12) and Mary (age 6). Also listed is William Skinner (age 55) – his mother was a member of the Daft family and he was, also, presumably a relative of Henry Skinner (above).
- 31st October 1842: Robert Corner marries Ann Wild in Hickling (there is no record that they had any children)
- John Corner’s death is recorded in 1846 (age 86)
- Elizabeth Corner’s death is recorded; burial 6th May 1849 (age 85) Hickling churchyard.

- Census 1851:
- Joseph Corner (age 65, pauper, born Hickling); wife, Elizabeth (age 62, pauper’s wife, born Kinoulton); daughter, Hannah Davis (age 19, lodger, born Hickling); Robert Davis (grandson, newborn, born Hickling).
- 13th April 1851: Robert Davis baptisedSt Luke’s, Hickling (parents Joseph and Anne (not Hannah) Davis; there is no obvious trace of Joseph Davis and none of these names appear in Hickling in the 1861 census). There may be a link to the Davis/Davies family on Hickling Pastures.
- John Corner (age 22, bricklayer, born Hickling); his wife Jane (age 20, born Hickling); daughter Mary Jane (newborn, born Hickling).
- Septimus Corner is head of household (shoemaker employing one man); also listed are his wife, Mary; unmarried daughter, Ann, tambourer; Ann Rouse (aunt, age 91, Parish Relief, formerly Cottager, born Frisby in Leics); William Skinner (unmarried male, age 67, retired servant, born Hickling); Henry Skinner (unmarried male, age 23, labourer and journeyman shoemaker, born Leics).
- Robert Corner (shoemaker, age 36, born Hickling) and his wife, Ann Corner (nee Wild, age 31, born Broughton) – see Robert Corner probate 1888.
- Joseph Corner (age 65, pauper, born Hickling); wife, Elizabeth (age 62, pauper’s wife, born Kinoulton); daughter, Hannah Davis (age 19, lodger, born Hickling); Robert Davis (grandson, newborn, born Hickling).
- 1853: Abstract of Title is produced for Robert Corner, the eldest child of Joseph & Elizabeth Corner (Joseph is named in the conveyance of this date (1853) and dies in 1862, although he doesn’t appear in the Hickling census of 1861). A conveyance of the same date is part of the settlement of the estate of the late Sarah Davies.
- Robert Corner and his wife, Ann (nee Wild), don’t appear to have had any children; terms in the conveyance imply that retaining the property within the Corner family is a priority and it may explain the involvement of Septimus Corner (Robert’s uncle).
- Census 1861:
- John Corner (age 32, bricklayer, born Hickling); his wife Jane (age 30, born Hickling); daughter Mary Jane (age 11, scholar); daughter Fanny (age 5, scholar).

- 24th Dec 1862:Joseph Corner (age 75) buried in Hickling St Luke’s churchyard
- 13th August 1870:John Corner (age 42, son of Septimus) buried at St. Luke’s, Hickling
- The children from John Corner’s first marriage are beneficiaries in the Will of his uncle, John Corner 1869.
- John’s wife, Jane, predeceased him (July 21st 1865, age 34); they are buried together in Hickling churchyard. Jane appears to have died in childbirth; her twin sons, John and William Corner were baptised in Hickling 25th July 1865.
- The early deaths of John and his first wife, Jane, left their young family in the care of John’s father, Septimus and John’s second wife, Mary Corner.
- John remarried – Mary (either Reek or Ward) in either 1869 or 1870; they had one daughter, Emily; Mary and Emily Corner remain in the village until their respective deaths in 1912 and 1953 (see, below & Robert Corner probate 1888). Neither Mary nor Emily seem to qualify for/receive support from the John Corner (snr/great uncle) legacies.
- John’s second wife’s origin is uncertain:
- 4th May 1869: John Corner marries Mary Ward in Hickling
- 1870: Mary Reek marries (unknown) in the Bingham District
- 4th Oct 1870: Mary Reek marries James Roberts in Flintham (no further trace of a Mary Roberts (born Cropwell Bishop) in the Notts census for 1871)
- 13th Feb 1870: Emily Corner’s birth record in Hickling shows her mother’s maiden name as ‘Reek’.
- Two of John’s children from his first marriage appear in the 1871 census in the household of Mary and Emily Corner which appears to support a link between the households.
- (it is possible that Mary Reek had a previous marriage, surname Ward, before marrying John Corner; however, there is no trace of a likely Mary Ward in the Notts or Leics census records for 1861 and no records for a Mary Reek marrying ‘Ward’ in this timeframe)
- John’s second wife’s origin is uncertain:
- 9th November 1870: John Corner (brother of Joseph and Septimus snr) dies (age 78).
- Census 1871:
- Septimus and his wife Mary (cottager & wife), their daughter Ann (cottager’s wife, age 35) and son-in-law Henry Dickman (cottager, age 30) and grandson William Corner (scholar age 5).
- William Corner also appears in the census records of 1881 and 1891; his baptismal records show that he is one of the twin youngest sons of John and Jane (nee Bowley/Bowlby) – following his father’s death the previous year, he is now shown to be living with his aunt and grandparents.
- (see also Will of John Corner 1869)
- Later census records show that he married Elizabeth (born in Hickling), that he was a grazier and had children of his own. He died in 1909.
- Note: William had a twin brother, John: he is found in his step-mother’s household, below.
- Mary Corner (nee Reek or Ward – widow & second wife of John Corner, dec’d 1870) – household in Brewhouse Yard, Hickling;

- (Elizabeth Ann and John are Mary’s step-children; the children of her husband’s first marriage to Jane (nee Bowly/Bowby).
- Emma O – daughter – age 1 – b.1870 (Hickling)
- (this is Emily, only child from John Corner’s second marriage – she doesn’t marry and lives alone with her mother until her mother’s death in 1912.
- Robert Corner (age 56, born 1815 in Hickling, cordwainer) and his wife, Ann (age 51, born 1820 in Broughton, Notts) listed at ‘Corner’s Yard’ opposite The Green.
- Septimus and his wife Mary (cottager & wife), their daughter Ann (cottager’s wife, age 35) and son-in-law Henry Dickman (cottager, age 30) and grandson William Corner (scholar age 5).
- 3rd January 1874: Daniel Corner dies (age 74). He married Ann Dickman in 1828 and they had 4 children; see 1828 (above). Daniel’s brother, John, in his will of 1869 records Daniel as a railway assistant living in Nottingham – he doesn’t appear in any Hickling census between 1841 & his death in 1874.
- 14th Jan 1874: Daniel Corner’s probate is proved; “The Will of Daniel Corner late of Doubleday’s-place Old Radford in the County of Nottingham Railway Assistant who died 3rd January 1874 at Doubleday’s-place was proved at Nottingham by George pilcher [his son-in-law] of Doubleday’s-place Gentleman the sole executor. Effects under £450.”
- 1st April 1876: Septimus Corner is buried at St. Luke’s, Hickling.
- He is buried in the same grave as his elder brother (also John Corner) who died in 9th Nov 1870 aged 78yrs. He appears in the 1861 census in Princes, Doncaster (unmarried boarder, age 65, retired servant, born Hickling).
- There were 8 children in all, Septimus being the 7th of the 8 although several of the children died young.
- (To be checked: death of Septimus Corner’s wife, Mary – date? where buried?

- Mary Corner (widow of Septimus Corner): Mary Corner – Head – Widow – age 73 – Annuitant (living off the annuity relating to her late brother-in-law’s will of 1869?)
- Also in Household; her daughter Ann Dickerson (Dickman) and husband Henry Dickerson (Dickman) and their 9-year old son John.
- William Corner (now age 15) remains in the household.
- 14th Aug 1888: Robert Corner buried Hickling churchyard (Mary Ann Corner (formerly Smith, nee Whittaker) appointed sole executor and beneficiary at probate) – see Probate documents 1888 inc. Robert Corner’s two marriages.
- 1889: Robert Corner’s widow Mary Anne Corner remarries – Charles Hodson (see fire insurance docs 1911/14). There are no children from either of Robert Corner’s marriages and the Corner’s Yard property moves into the Hodson family.
- (see Mary Ann Corner/Hodson, below)
Miss Emily Corner (1870-1953)
Miss Emily Corner is frequently mentioned in Maggie Wadkin’s book of memories and also in Grantham Journal articles about village events. Most notably she was the Church organist for many years.
- 13th August 1870:John Corner (age 42, son of Septimus) buried at St. Luke’s, Hickling

- The early deaths of John and his first wife, Jane, left their young family in the care of John’s father, Septimus and John’s second wife, Mary Corner.
- John remarried – Mary (either Reek or Ward) in either 1869 or 1870; they had one daughter, Emily; Mary and Emily Corner remain in the village until their respective deaths in 1912 and 1953. Neither Mary nor Emily seem to qualify for/receive support from the John Corner (snr/great uncle) legacies.

- 4th May 1869: John Corner marries Mary Ward in Hickling
- 1870: Mary Reek marries (unknown) in the Bingham District

- John’s second wife’s origin is uncertain:
- Assuming that Emily’s mother was Mary Reek; Mary was born in Cropwell Bishop in 1841.

Hannah (Milnes) Morris:
- (To be verified): relationship between Thomas Milnes and Hannah Milnes (there seems to be a Thomas Milnes in each generation which isn’t helpful); however, the Thomas Milnes and Hannah Morris referred to in the Hodson’s Yard documents appear to be brother/sister or nephew/aunt depending on which generation of Thomas Milnes.
- Note: Hannah’s daughter, Sarah, married into the Daft family but died 3 years after her marriage.
- 4th March 1755: Hannah Milnes baptised in Hickling (daughter of Thomas and Mary Milnes)

Sarah Davis/Davies
- Sarah Davies is the unmarried sister of John Davies (also unmarried) who was a farmer on Hickling Pastures (according to census records). She was baptised in Hickling on 3rd December 1777.
- This would make her almost a generation younger than John Corner (senior, b.1760) and Thomas Milnes (senior, b.1758) – parties in the 1803 conveyance.
- Sarah Davies is recorded in the Corner Abstract of Title 1813-1854; she takes on the mortgage in 1834.
- 1841 census; members of the Corner family can be located in the Davies and the Thurman households as servants.
- 1841 census; Located on The Pastures – Sarah Davies (unmarried, age 55) is housekeeper to her brother, John Davies (farmer, age 60). Elizabeth Corner (age 20) is a female servant in the household.
- 1851 census: Located on The Pastures – Sarah Davies (unmarried, age 72) is housekeeper to her brother, John Davies (farmer, age 79). Both are buried in Hickling churchyard.
- There is also a younger John Davies* (age 21, servant) listed and two further servants (surname Greenfield).
- *Could this John Davies have anything to do with the Hannah Davies (nee Corner, age 19) and her newborn son, Robert recorded in the household of Joseph Corner in the 1851 census? (Robert’s parents are listed as Joseph and Anne on his baptism records but there is no trace beyond this and none of the information appears to tie in correctly).
- In 1861 John Davies is listed on Hickling Pastures as a farmer and head of his own household; he is married with children and servants and appears to have inherited the unmarried John Davies’ (b. 1772) estate following his death in 1857.
- (The 1861 census record shows his wife as Elizabeth, not Hannah or Anne (Corner/Davis) and Robert is not listed)
- This Sarah Davies fits the death, burial & probate details given in the Abstract of Title 1813-54.
- Sarah Davies wrote her Will on 19th October 1850. She died on 21st May 1853. She appointed two executors who were also her sole beneficiaries: William Collishaw (the younger of Waterlane Farm) and John Thurman (of Hickling Pastures). Her Will is proved by both Executors in the prerogative Court of York on the 22nd of Sept 1853.
- William Collishaw: 1851 census is listed as unmarried, age 35 (b. 1816); he is in the household of his father (also William – farmer, age 74, b. 1877). This would explain the description in Sarah Davies’ Will of William Collishaw, junior.
- William Collishaw farmed Waterlane Farm in the village of Hickling; the Davies and Thurman households are on Hickling Pastures.
- There is no immediate link between the two households; Davies/Collishaw or Corner/Thurman.
- John Thurman: The Thurman family are listed in census records as farmers on Hickling Pastures and close neighbours of the Davies household; he is named as a married farmer (age 30, b. 1803) on Hickling Pastures in the 1851 census.
- Joseph Corner (age 15, b.1826) is listed as an agricultural labourer in his household in the 1841 census – confirming links between the Davies/Thurman/Corner households.
- Conveyance Sept 1853: prepared in part settlement of the estate of the late Sarah Davies and naming her executors and Joseph and Robert Corner.
- Sept 1853: Joseph Spencer – party to the conveyance, above.
- Joseph Spencer of Kinoulton, lime burner
- 1851 Kinoulton census records list a Joseph Spencer (age 64, b. 1787), Limeburner employing 20 men.
- No clear link to any of the other involved parties.
Mary Ann Corner/Hodson (formerly Smith, nee Whittaker of Long Clawson):
- Spellings vary: Witaker/Whitaker/Whittaker
- 24th Dec 1826: baptism of Mary Ann Whitaker – parents William and Sarah (her birth date is given as 19th September 1826 on her gravestone in 1914).
- Census 1841 (Nether Broughton): Mary Whitaker (age 14) in the household of her parents William & Sarah (both age 35) with siblings, Harriett (age 12) and Sarah (age 3).
- Mary Anne Whitaker (age 22)marries Freeman Smith in 1848. A record of Banns 29th Oct 1848 between Mary Anne Whitaker of Nether Broughton and Freeman Smith of Long Clawson.
- Marriage record; Nether Broughton 23rd Nov 1848. Mary Anne’s father is William Whittaker. Freeman Smith’s father (of Long Clawson) is John Smith.
- Census 1851 Long Clawson): 2 in household – Freeman Smith (age 28, b.1823 Knipton, Leics, agricultural labourer) and Mary A Smith (age 25, b.1826, Nether Broughton, laceworker).
- Census 1861 (Long Clawson): 2 in household – Freeman Smith (age 38, b.1823 Kingston, Leics, agricultural labourer) and Mary A Smith (age 38, b.1823, Nether Broughton, worker of figures on lace).
- Census 1871 (Long Clawson): 2 in household – Freeman Smith (age 48, b.1823 Knipton, Leics, agricultural labourer) and Mary A Smith (age 43, b. 1826, Nether Broughton, no occupation listed).
- 3rd February 1879: burial record for Freeman Smith, Long Clawson.
- Feb 19th 1879: Robert Corner’s first wife, Ann Corner (nee Wild) dies aged 59yrs – she is buried with Robert Corner in Hickling Churchyard.
- Dec 29th 1879: Robert Corner (age 64)marries Mary Anne Smith (age 53) of Long Clawson (widow, nee Whitaker) – see also Robert Corner Probate 1888.
- On the marriage certificate:
- Both Robert and Mary Anne are recorded as widowed
- Robert (widowed) is a shoemaker of Hickling and his father, Joseph, is deceased (1862).
